Turf Restoration Process

Step #1

Identify the Problem Area

When deciding on the next project, we usually look to areas that represent a safety hazard to either the park workers or the tourists. For example, a spot like project 12 could be a falling or slipping hazard; so we evaluate the area and brainstorm possible ways of tackling the problem.

Step #2

Mark the Edges

After determining the areas we need to work on and how to do it, we mark the edges with spray paint and dig them out to know the space we'll be working with.

Step #3

Measure and remove sod

Once the edges are marked, the next step is to measure the spot, so that we can determine how much sod will be planted. We tend to do the measuring by hand, accompanied by a GIS app to give us an idea of the size of the area.
Afterward, we take our shovels and start digging, clearing out any damaged grass. Because of the historic nature of the fort, we are not allowed to go deeper than 2 inches, although the depth could vary depending on the condition of the terrain and our needs.

Step #4

Sand and Level

After the hole is dug, we proceed with adding the sand (or soil) to the area and start leveling it. For that, we use a sod leveler, to make it smooth and even. Although, we've also done this process by hand, suing our feet and shovels when the appropriate tools are not available.

Step #5

Plant Sod

When the sod arrives, we plant it so that it covers the entire indentation. If there is any extra sod left we use to cover bald spots within the project or to finish any remaining ones. We do it in a way that looks consistent and clean, to avoid the grass growing in a sloppy manner.

Step #6

Water and Monitor

Finally, we water! After the sod is planted we water it continuously for a week while monitoring its health. We also make sure to note any incidents or damage done by tourists, in case we need to take other action.
